Dr. Flora L. Williams is Professor Emerita, Pastor, Church Musician, Chaplain, Accredited Financial Counselor, Registered Financial Consultant, Speaker, and Mother of three. Her faith journey is the most important venture for her and teaches her through life trials, painful and peaceful. She credits any accomplishments to the leading and energizing of the Holy Spirit. Her motto is to glorify God and serve others. She exemplifies how the Holy Spirit moves ordinary people to do extra-ordinary things.
Flora went to Lakeville schools, was an active member of the Bremen Church of the Brethren, and enjoyed Camp Mack. Her educational journey continued at Manchester College majoring in music and education and receiving the B.S. degree. She received her masters and Ph.D. from Purdue University. Her work after public schools for eight years was at Purdue University for 32 years, and includes teaching at the University of California at Davis, Jio Tong University in Shanghai, China, and the Viscosa Federal University in Brazil. As Associate and Full Professor, she directed 23 graduate students’ research and taught graduate/ undergraduate courses. Research was on poverty and quality of life issues.
Her writing journey includes 18 books on family economics and financial counseling. She has written over 100 research articles and papers on quality of life, family financial and public policy impacts. These were presented in countries around the world. She founded and directed the financial advising clinic for 20 years, a teaching clinic, which was awarded outstanding financial counseling center in the U.S. in 2002.
Her professional journey includes conducting workshops, speaking at plant closings, being an economic expert on family services, keynote speaker at caregiver/disability conferences, consulting, referred reviewing, and working on boards of directors/trustees.
Awards are numerous including the Sagamore of the Wabash, highest Indiana award, Golden Medallion for scholarship and encouraging women faculty/ students, Purdue University and Manchester College outstanding alumna awards, Union Counseling Award, Consumer Credit Counseling Service contribution award, outstanding papers, Who’s Who of America, Outstanding Achievement in Poetry, and others. She is past president of the international Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education. She is a “distinquished fellow” in the AFCPE.
At age 65 her journey took her to Bethany Theological Seminary to work on the Master of Divinity Degree, received May 6, 2006. She is a pastor in the Church of the Brethren, ordained on June 18, 2006. She was inerim/student pastor at Greenwood, Indiana. She was chaplain intern at Indiana University Medical Center and Riley Children’s Hospital, and at the Brethren Home in Greenville, Ohio. She has Sunday worship services at a retirement community and a nursing home. Her book Hand in Hand with God: Witnessing on the Way is available. She gives musical/inspirational programs as requested. She is writing a book for pastors, financial counselors, and church leaders: The Shepherd’s Guide through the Valley of Debt and Financial Change. Flora and husband Leiw, a retired school teacher, reside in Lafayette, Indiana where they enjoy being grandparents, traveling, and tending flowers. Adult children are a son working as Projecy Director in Afghanistan, a daughter in graduate school and teaching English as a second language, and a son who is Special Agent for Diplomatic Security in the State Department.
